Legions of the Dead

"Legions of the Dead" is a short story by L. Sprague de Camp and Lin Carter featuring the fictional sword and sorcery hero Conan the Barbarian created by Robert E. Howard. In the opinion of de Camp critic Morgan Holmes, Catherine Crook de Camp may have had a hand in the writing as well.〔(Holmes, Morgan. "The de Camp Controversy: Part 12" ), 4 October 2008. Accessed 9 June 2009〕 It was first published by Bantam Books in the paperback collection ''Conan the Swordsman'' in August 1978. Later paperback editions of the collection were issued by Ace Books (1987 and 1991). The first hardcover edition was published by Tor Books in 2002. The book has also been translated into Italian. It was later gathered together with ''Conan the Liberator'' and ''Conan and the Spider God'' into the omnibus collection ''Sagas of Conan'' (Tor Books, 2004).
==Plot summary==
The Hyperboreans have kidnapped Rann, the daughter of Njal, head of a band of Aesir, who leads his men on a raid to win her back. The young Cimmerian Conan participates in the raid. Ominously, the thirty men sent ahead as scouts vanish, and when the rest reach the enemy stronghold they witness them being tortured to death on the fortress walls. Conan infiltrates the castle and recovers the girl, whereupon the Aesir take flight for Asgard, pursued by the Hyperboreans. Turning at bay, Njal's men realize that the reanimated corpses of their slain comrades are among those fighting against them. In the ensuing battle, Conan is taken by the enemy. (His escape is detailed in "The Thing in the Crypt," previously published but later chronologically.)
